The New American Family Dynamic - Depression & other Mental Illnesses
Terry McMillan's latest work, "Who Asked You" offers insight to a limited Black and non-Black audience of the 'tools' heads of Black family households have resorted to using to survive life in New America.
I've pasted some excerpts from the Essence Magazine article here to give you a taste of what it's about:
"If I had it to do over, I probably wouldn't have had any kids."
"For starters, I didn't always put my kids
first. I mean I had needs too. Back then,
between them and Lee David, I felt just like
a pie. Everybody wanted a piece of me and
barely left me with a little crust. Plus, I had
to work. I did not talk to them in what they
now call an inside voice. I talked to them
like they were hard of hearing. It was the
only way I could let them know I meant
business."
"The worst part is when
the little suckers grow up and don't appreciate the time and
energy you put into them. Mine seem to have major lapses in
memory. What they remember most is how much you got on
their nerves."
Is it any wonder why so many Black single mothers feel unappreciated, rejected and disposed of like a useless commodity? And that's after sacrificing, sharing, and applying ourselves 200% to ensure our kids sense the selfless love we gave them and we expect them to give of themselves to others. Instead, they turn out differently.
What's missing - philosophical a / o religious underpinning.
